Modern CNC machines and an experienced team of operators guarantee machining precision of up to ±0.01mm.
What is CNC milling?
CNC milling is a cutting method in which material is removed by a rotating multi-edge tool - a milling cutter. Unlike turning, where the workpiece rotates, in milling the workpiece is stationary or moves linearly, while the milling cutter performs the rotary motion.
Key features of CNC milling:
- Tool rotates at high speed (thousands of RPM)
- Workpiece moves in 3, 4, or 5 axes
- Ability to create complex spatial shapes
- High precision and dimensional repeatability
- Process automation according to programmed G-code
Milling of aluminum and aluminum alloys
Aluminum is the most frequently milled metal due to its excellent machinability, low density, and good mechanical properties.
Aluminum alloys we mill:
- Al 2024, 7075 – high strength (aviation, sports, automotive)
- Al 6082, 6060 – universal structural applications
- Al 5083, 5754 – corrosion resistance (marine industry)
Applications of aluminum milling:
- Electronic device housings
- Radiators with cooling fins
- Gearbox housings for automotive
- Frames and structures of lightweight machines
- Flanges and adapters
- Prototypes and concept models
Advantages of aluminum milling:
- Very good machinability (high cutting speeds)
- Possibility of thin walls (even 0.5mm)
- Excellent surface quality
- Possibility of anodizing after machining
Precision: Tolerances up to ±0.01mm, roughness Ra 0.8-3.2 µm
Milling of structural and alloy steel
Structural steel is the basic material for machine parts requiring high strength and rigidity.
Steel grades we mill:
- C45, C45E – most popular steel for mechanical elements
- 42CrMo4, 41Cr4 – alloy steel for loaded components
- S235, S355 – structural steel for frames and structures
- 18HGT – steel for carburizing and hardening
Applications:
- Bearing and gearbox housings
- Machine mounting plates
- Connection flanges
- Welded frames and structures (milling after welding)
- Gears (milling before hardening)
Challenges in steel milling:
- Higher cutting force (slower speeds than aluminum)
- Greater tool wear
- Need for intensive cooling
Precision: Tolerances up to ±0.02mm, possibility of more precise machining after heat treatment
Milling of stainless and acid-resistant steel
Stainless steel requires specialized knowledge due to its tendency to harden and more difficult machinability.
Stainless steel grades:
- 304 (1.4301) – universal stainless steel, low carbon
- 316 (1.4401) – acid-resistant steel with molybdenum (aggressive environments)
- 303 (1.4305) – free-cutting steel, better machinability
Applications:
- Equipment for food industry
- Chemical and petrochemical apparatus
- Components for marine industry
- Medical device elements
- Installation fittings
Specifics of stainless steel milling:
- Low cutting speeds
- High cutting forces (tool edge)
- Tendency to work hardening
- Requires experienced operator
- Intensive cooling
Precision: Tolerances up to ±0.02mm
Milling of tool steel
Tool steel is used for production of injection molds, dies, and other production tools.
Tool steel grades:
- NC6 (1.2714), NC10 (1.2738) – injection molds
- K340 (1.2601) – blanking dies, punches
- HS6-5-2 (1.3343) – high-speed steel
Typical process:
- Milling in softened state (before hardening)
- Heat treatment (hardening at client’s or partner’s)
- Finishing grinding (optionally at our facility)
Applications:
- Injection molds for plastics
- Blanking and stamping dies
- Punches, blanking tools
- Tools for plastic forming
Precision: ±0.02-0.03mm before hardening, ±0.005-0.01mm after grinding
Milling of brass, copper, bronze
Non-ferrous metals with excellent electrical and thermal conductivity.
Applications:
- Electrical terminals and connectors
- Installation fittings (valves, fittings)
- Decorative elements
- Sliding components (bronze)
- Radiators and heat exchangers (copper)
Advantages of brass milling:
- Very good machinability
- Excellent surface quality
- Possibility of polishing
- Fast machining
Milling of plastics (polymers)
Plastics require specialized knowledge of machining parameters and material properties.
Engineering plastics:
- Polyamide PA6, PA66 – gears, guides, bearings
- Polyoxymethylene POM-C – best dimensional stability
- Polycarbonate PC – high impact resistance, possibility of transparent elements
- Polyethylene PE-HD, PE-UHMW – very low friction
Specialty plastics:
- PEEK – high operating temperature (up to 260°C), aviation/medical industry
- PTFE (Teflon) – lowest friction coefficient, chemical resistance
- PVC – rigidity, atmospheric resistance
Challenges in polymer milling:
- Low melting temperature (risk of local melting)
- Tendency to deform
- Proper selection of cutting speed
- Minimal clamping forces (soft material)
- Special tools (sharp angles, minimal friction)
Applications:
- Gears and transmissions (PA, POM)
- Sliding bearings (PTFE, POM)
- Gaskets and seals (PE, PTFE)
- Elements for food industry (PE, PP)
- Electrical insulators (PC, PEEK)
- Medical components (PEEK)
Precision: Tolerances up to ±0.05mm (depending on material and size)
